Having been born a man, Candice left her native South Africa in 2004 to settle (reinvented) in London. The 23 year old international minger and spoon designer is a self-taught artist who works mainly in finger paints. At the age of 10 she completed her first project: a lunar refugee centre constructed entirely of wattle and daub. The piece, entitled “Mommy, my brain hurts”, won her acclaim, though she withdrew entirely from the arts scene for five years after the death of Diana, Princess of Hearts. Chris Jordan’s latest project, Running the Numbers, examines vast and bizarre measures of American society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 28,000 42-gallon barrels, the amount of of oil consumed in the United States every two minutes (equal to the flow of a medium-sized river).
